Hanging shelves with invisible fixings

June 18, 2026

How can you hang shelves with no visible fixings? Philip Hall, our Technical Manager, outlines the simple rules for achieving a strong and stable result.

Video commentary:

Hi, I'm Phil Hall, technical manager at Button-fix. We're often asked, can we use Button-fix for shelving? You certainly can, but there are a few basic rules.

Don't try and fix into a narrow edge with a single row of Fixes. This just won't be strong and puts a massive load on the Fix.

Make sure you have a reasonable upstand or downstand. This small shelf is 125mm (5") deep and 85mm (3.3") high, on just a pair of Type 1 Flush. But it's still pretty strong as you can see.

For ultimate strength, make sure that the upstand height is a similar size to the depth of the shelf. And with a couple of rows of Fixes, you'll pretty much hold anything up.
